Vintage Phaser Shootout: 70s Mu-tron Phaser II vs. 80s Arion SPH-1

hi folks today we're going to have a phaser shootout and this phaser shootout is going to be shot out with two three knob phasers we have a vintage well-used somewhat abused mutron phaser 2 it is ac powered here and it's on so it that does not mean the effect is on it just means the unit is on uh you have to guess when the effect is on and here we have a very minty fresh ariane sph-1 stereo phaser which we are running in mono today and it came with the box and the papers and the warranty card which we're gonna send in and get our warranty yes it's a limited warranty but you know hey you should always use your warranty cards anyhow we're gonna do a little shootout now some of you might say it's kind of like putting this uh cheap ariane from the 80s up against this uh very nice mutron from the 70s is like bringing a knife to a gunfight but you know i don't think so i i think they can play together and they don't have to fight at all so let's let's maybe we'll call it a play date instead of a shootout yeah that's it two phasers having a playdate all right now i've got them set similarly similarly and as you notice the knobs are nowhere near similar we started with the neutron with all the knobs in the middle and tried to get the aryan close to it and it never even got close but this is as close as it's gonna get and then we're gonna twiddle the knobs go to the extremities and maybe later we'll turn them both on our amp for today is the power sonic by custom craft two six v sixes two twelve ax sevens a five y three rectifier and a twelve inch speaker with a lollipop map on there yeah mike sorry mike mike anyway we've also got the soaring tortoise electronic sunshine guitar with one p90 pickup from gibson and uh we have it set so that it has the tone control cancelled which is the p90 the volume control right into the phasers so this is my bypass tone really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really all right so the uh the mutron is very high five very clean does not really color the guitar signal at all maybe a little bold really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really all right i'm going to twiddle the knobs a little here let's put this guy's knobs in the middle and see what it sounds like as i said before this is a stereo phaser and we have it set direct so it's going mono now so much slower than the uh at the same settings so now let's try and match the mutant with this oh yeah that's pretty close is foreign uh ah let's go for all slow so the uh area foreign all right slow as it'll go with everything up on the mutron same thing for the area why oh all right let's go fast now so let's say the area you
