Nowe Audi Q4 e-tron, czyli aerodynamika elektryka (TEST PL 4K) | CaroSeria

The European Comission has just announced that there will be no possibility to sell petrol engine cars in Europe in 2035. This is how we care about polar bears and seal pups! It looks like we need to get used to electric cars ASAP. This is the AUDI Q4 E-TRON, the third or the fourth electric car from this brand. Q4, because its dimensions are exactly between the Q3 and Q5. 460 cm length, 276 cm wheelbase. But it's not so tall: only 160 cm. AUDI says it will reduce the air resistance, and its factor is 0.28. Nice result for a SUV. This result comes from a couple innovative solutions. Look at this plastic element, professionally called "deflector". Where does it come from? Well, during the wind tunnel tests, it was noticed that the air bounces off this edge and causes turbulence. Thanks to these deflectors the air flows smoothly and the range is 4 km longer. Thanks to this closed single frame we have another 4 km of range. But this is what I like the best: mini 3D spoilers. Wanna know how much range do they give? 14 km! Because the rubber is 255 in the front and 275 in the back, so these spoilers reduce the air resistance on wheels.

And what about the mirrors? Look at this little line here, this gives 2 km. Even here, in the back. Look at this rubber element: it will silence the noise here and prevent the air from going inside. Again: 4 km. All of these aerodynamic elements extend the range by 40 km. The car was built on the same platform as Skoda Enyaq and VW ID.3, so the batteries are in the same place as well. They are placed in the floor, very low – AUDI emphasizes that they are below the wheel level. See? They are this low, of course to keep the balance in perfect 50:50 proportions. And the center of gravity is low, too. The engine, let's check it now. Oh… piece of cake. And.. no engine here! This car has the engine in the back, with 170 horsepower as standard.

You can also choose the 204 horsepower version, also with rear-wheel drive. Only in the "50" version you get two engines: 190 horsepower in the back and 109 in the front. All together it gives 299 horsepower. One moment! Forgot to show you something here! Look at this blind – it looks just like a blind in your house. When the engine and batteries don't need cooling, this blind is closed and it saves energy. Why? Because the cool air doesn't go in… Anyway, this works. Just sayin'. The battery in 170 horsepower engine version has 55 kWh. In the two other versions it has 82 kWh.

According to AUDI, the ranges are from 400 up to over 520 km. But. This wide wheelbase and the fact that the car was designed as electric from scratch have some effects. The front seat is set for me, remember. And in this compact car – this is how AUDI calls it – I have so much space for my legs and flat floor, so the third passenger will have no problems here. And here, with the front seat moved more to the front, I can even put my feet underneath. The seat can be folded in 40:20:40 proportions, so you can carry e.g. skis. One more thing. There are exactly 183 cm from this element to the brake pedal. This is exactly the same dimension as the Q7, with 26 cm wider wheelbase.

AUDI also emphasizes the multitude of compartments here. And, of course, there are two cup holders. But there's something that shows us that this AUDI is from a lower segment. Just listen to this. Plastic everywhere, the only soft parts are here, for the elbow. Like in the A3. 520L load capacity in the trunk, counted with the space under the floor. But I can't tell you how it's divided. Luckily, the floor is easily removable. It's strange though that there's no trunk in the front – even a 50L space would be fine to hide the wires etc. But no matter if there's engine or not, you won't be able to put anything there.

AUDI really takes serious this model: we can find some solutions here used for the first time in brand's history. You won't find them in A8 or Q7, only here, in Q4 E-TRON. The first one is the head-up display with AR. The static part shows you signs, speed etc. The dynamic part shows you a large, 70-80" screen 10 m ahead of you. And there the GPS shows exactly which turn you need to take, how to leave the roundabout, where to park etc. It even cooperates with the lane assistant and shows it dynamically. The second novelty is the flat wheel: in the lower and at the top of it. Thanks to this you'll see the head-up perfectly.

The third thing: configurable LED daytime running lamps. So.. vehicle, lights… digital light signatures. Now you can choose one of four types. And the last thing to debut in Q4… I've got it. Within few weeks this screen will be available in 12". And instead of Bang & Olufson AUDI introduces Sonos. The company has made their first car audio system especially for Q4. I really like those AC physical buttons. They are intuitive and simple. The wheel's shape refers to the old AUDI cross-shaped wheels. And the keys here are tactile, so you just need to move your finger here, but they are also clickable and highlighted nicely. And about compartments – apparently, all together they have 25L. One here, in the armrest, and huge one for the passenger – too bad it's made of plastic.

By the way, the plastic is omnipresent here. This centre console is plastic… At this point I can feel soft fabric. Oh, and of course, piano! Brushed stainless here… So, I must say, As far as the eye can see, everything looks fine. Oh man, it enters turns nicely hanks to this low battery! I can feel how low this centre of gravity is placed here. This is what I like about electric cars.

In traditional cars you can feel them leaning because of a heavy engine located quite high. This one can be compared it to a go-kart. While we're on driving, let's talk about suspension. It can be classic, active with shock absorber control, or sports. Active and sports options are of course additionally payable. You can also pay extra for a steering with variable transmission steering. Oh, this is really soft. And here, and here.. Only here I can feel plastic. So, with the 170 horsepower engine the battery has 55 kWh and it lasts for ca. 320 km range. This sounds fine for daily driving around town. It can be charged fully with 100 kW power in 40 minutes. Versions with more powerful battery can be charged with 125 kW power and charging for 130 km range takes 10 minutes. Due to the fact that the engine is in the back and the front axle has no drive, the turning circle is over 10 m! Just like a Smart. It really stays in place! Just to compare: in Q3 it has 12 m. So, the standard, 170 horsepower version, it can be charged with max. 100 kW power. And if you're charging it at home with a wallbox, it will be around 6-7 kW.

But the version with 82 kWh battery an be charged with max. 125 kW power, ar at home it will take 11 kW. That makes sense, because you can charge it fully at home in 7 hours. The basic version goes 0 to 60 in 9 seconds, so it will be enough for daily driving. 204 horsepower needs 8.5 seconds and the highest version with "50" mark needs 6.2 seconds. And it can drive 180 km/h, while the previous ones 160. AUDI confirms that this is a city car and for me these results are just fine. Or even satisfying when it comes to AUDI Q4 ETRON 50 QUATTRO. 6.2 seconds. Wow. This version has 204 horsepower and I must say it feels way stronger than 8.5 seconds from the description. I'm stepping on it and it accelerates so smoothly and agile, I'm impressed! In my opinion it drives better than the catalogue says. Oh, and there's no gearbox lag like in some AUDIs. Only one gear here. No, sorry, two, let's not forget the reverse. One more thing about the QUATTRO version. These two engines are different: synchronic in the back and asynchronic in the front. Now how can I explain how it works… In the efficency mode the front engine starts only at kick-down.

In every other mode it's waiting for any wheel spin or grip loss and starts within 30 millieseconds. So, why synchronic and asynchronic? Because the asynchronic one has no permanents magnets, so it doesn't resist while driving on the back engine. And if it doesn't resist, it has less energy consumption. I have no f***ing clue what does it mean, but AUDI engineer told us that yesterday. The recuperation is finally improved: there are these new paddles to control it. Look: we're going downhill and it slowing down all the time. Almost until stop, I'm not braking now. Look: still going down. It will slow down up to 8 km/h, then you need to brake.

You can also turn on the most powerful recuperation, by moving this element and letter "B" instead of "D" is highlighted. Apparently it works up to 0.3 g-force and afterwards it brakes traditionally. Another interesting fact: in the back there are brake drums instead of discs. Why? Because not being used too often, the discs could have got rusty. Recuperation is the main way of braking in this car. How much is it? The basic 170 horsepower version costs 195k PLN (40k €). Only 10k PLN more than the basic version of Skoda Enyaq.

Enyaq has 7kWh more battery power, but apart from that it the equipment is almost identical. OK, maybe they will give you 13" screen as standard. Will we fit here? F**k me, how great is this turning circle! Oh, and can it drift? Hush! So this is this rear-wheel drive with 204 horsepower… Can I turn it off? Yeah, limited driving stability. Attention! No, it can't drift.
